Honesty

What is real, what is modeled, and what we got wrong.

Published because the counters below have to go to zero, and because a vertical where the incumbent is conflicted is one where saying this out loud is worth something.

The three categories

measured

Measured

Specifications, EPA efficiency, recalls, crash ratings, charging locations, state fees and electricity rates. Sourced from federal agencies, cited per field.

modeled

Modeled estimate

Depreciation forecasts, insurance estimates, repair reserves, real-world range. Labeled as modeled on every surface where they appear.

sample

Not available

Any listing not sourced from a live feed. Badged, and counted publicly below.

never

We do not publish a figure sourced from the wrong vehicle. A field with no trustworthy source renders as a dash and says why.

Sources

  • NHTSA vPIC
    specs, plant country
  • EPA fueleconomy.gov
    range, MPGe, charge time
  • NHTSA Recalls
    open recalls
  • NHTSA Complaints
    owner complaints
  • NHTSA NCAP
    crash ratings
  • DOE AFDC / NLR
    charging stations
  • DOE AFDC Laws
    state incentives and fees
  • EIA

All public, all federal, all free. None of it is licensed, so none of it can be taken away from you by a vendor.

What we do not have

Title, accident and odometer history. That data sits behind Carfax, AutoCheck and NMVTIS. We do not have it and will not imply that we do. Buy a history report separately before you buy any vehicle.

Battery state of health. Measuring it requires vehicle telemetry we do not collect. Recurrent does this properly. We show EPA range and model the effect of temperature, speed and load — we do not estimate the health of a specific battery.

Per-VIN recall completion. NHTSA publishes recalls by model year, not whether a specific car was repaired. We show the campaigns; you must check the VIN.
